FARMHOUSES OF HÄLSINGLAND

It’s been said that neither the oak nor nobility has been able to take root north of the Dal River. Instead, it was the culture of the farmers that flourished due to the abundance of pine trees here. The traditional country farmhouses of Hälsingland were built to be large and impressive – besides the main home for the farm owner and his family and the usual housing for the farm animals and equipment, separate buildings could be especially built for weddings and parties, for baking, for housing textiles, as well as housing for the milk maids and for the farm hands. About one thousand Hälsingland farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries are still preserved today. Some of them are open for tours, some offer conference and dining services, and others you can even spend the night in!
